An honest guide to the leathers, finishes and fittings behind our designs.
Understanding Leather Grades
Leather is described by how much of the natural hide surface is retained. Full-grain keeps the complete natural grain and tends to develop a rich patina. Top-grain has the surface lightly sanded for a more uniform look. Genuine leather is a broad term and does not indicate a particular grade. [CONFIRM: state exactly which grades Fellmoor products use – do not claim full-grain unless verified]
Finishes
Finishes influence feel, colour depth and wear: from natural, lightly finished surfaces to more protected pigmented finishes. [CONFIRM: list finishes used on each product line]
Tanning
Tanning turns raw hide into durable leather. Methods such as vegetable and chrome tanning produce different characteristics. [CONFIRM: tannage per product; do not claim vegetable-tanned unless confirmed]
Hardware & Linings
Hardware and linings are selected to suit daily use. [CONFIRM: metal finishes, zip brand, lining materials]
Patina & Ageing
Natural leather changes with use – deepening in tone and softening in hand. Light marks and variation in grain are characteristic of natural material.
